Christian Aid is an international development agency working in 47 countries around the world. Christian Aid commenced operations in Nigeria in 2003 and have worked with local communities, individuals and groups as facilitators of social development in the areas of Health and Human Development, Democracy and Good Governance; and Humanitarian and Sustainable Development. With marginalized and vulnerable groups at the centre of our interventions, we have designed, funded, implemented and complemented programmes using a rights based approach, and taking power dynamics into account, to empower communities to drive their own sustainable development and effectively engage with all stakeholders’ accountability and increase their participation in decision making processes for development.

About the role

The Safeguarding Coordinator will be based in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. The post holder will report to the Nigeria Country Director and matrix managed by the Safeguarding Manager. It will not have direct reports but will be required to oversee the implementation of Christian Aid’s corporate response to safeguarding policies and procedures across Christian Aid’s programme in the country of operation.  This will require building a network of key contacts both inside and outside of Christian Aid.  The role will be expected to support the local team and will have the necessary interpersonal skills and a proven track record for doing this.  The successful applicant will act as an advisor to the Country Team in safeguarding matters.  Ability to influence a range of audiences to ensure the best outcome for Christian Aid country programme on safeguarding risks is required.  The successful candidate will be required to deal with sensitive matters comprehensively and robustly including safeguarding investigations. The role will involve travel nationally to ensure the effective implementation of the safeguarding work across the country. It may also be called upon to support investigations or safeguarding initiatives within Christian Aid’s wider geography.

About you

The successful candidate is required to have a degree in relevant discipline. She/he is required to have considerable experience of safeguarding policy and procedure implementation including knowledge of local legislation and regulation; and relevant enforcement bodies. She/he is required to have experience of delivering safeguarding training and awareness to a diverse audience, considerable experience of conducting and managing investigations. The successful candidate is required to have influencing skills and ability to work with complexity, highly empathetic and have excellent communication skills. The successful candidate should have ability to perform the role confidentially and in a sensitive manne, be willing to keep abreast of and feedback on local safeguarding issues.
