CHAI will convene a consortium of leading clinical and health systems experts in the country to design, test, and scale-up a replicable model for reducing maternal deaths, newborn deaths, and stillbirths over a four-year period. The program will strengthen national governance structures for policy development and implementation as well as provincial and district management’s capacity to strategically plan and manage service delivery to improve MNH outcomes.

Position Overview

CHAI is looking to hire a highly motivated individual for the role. This individual will be responsible for managing workstreams across key stakeholders within national and sub-national government, implementing partners, and academic/research institutions to deploy a multi-factorial approach for quality improvement in Maternal and Newborn health. In addition, he/she will collaborate closely with CHAI South Africa’s Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH) Program to identify and address critical gaps in service delivery across the reproductive life cycle.

The position is based in CHAI offices in Pretoria and may require up to 30% travel within South Africa and internationally.

  • Provide technical assistance to NDoH in formulating coordinated approaches and targeted strategies to reduce maternal and newborn mortality support by planning, data collection and analysis, supportive supervision, forecasting of commodities, strategy development, developing presentations and briefings, and coordination with various stakeholders
  • Manage workstreams supporting various aspects of South Africa’s MNH goals, including but not limited to indicator development, routine monitoring, training/workshop planning with NDoH, and supportive supervision
  • Document the implementation of CHAI supported interventions and support the country team in the preparation of donor reports
  • Liaise closely with technical partners in government to monitor and evaluate interventions against objectives and targets
  • Manage a team, provide mentorship and performance feedback
  • Work with government partners to set programme direction and goals and identify strategic areas for expansion or redirection
  • Lead grant management across multiple partners and funding streams including development and implementation of processes and tools for planning, budgeting, financial reporting, and monitoring and reporting programmatic progress
  • Lead preparation of high-quality reports for donors, ensuring the appropriate data is collected during project periods to support adequate reporting
  • Lead consortium of partners in supporting government to formulate and execute targeted strategies and national scale-up plans to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes including support for costing, operational planning, and deployment coordination
  • Develop strong working relationships with key stakeholders in national and provincial government, implementing partners, donors, and research/academic institutions to ensure coordination of resources and efforts
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

  • At least 5 years of experience in fast-paced, results-oriented environments with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
  • Bachelor’s Degree with exceptional experience; Master’s Degree in Economics, Public Policy, Public Health or other relevant field preferred
  • Previous work experience in economics and/or public sector financing, particularly in the health sector and in South Africa/Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, organizational, leadership, and problem solving skills
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to prepare compelling presentations that translate the results of team activities into meaningful policy recommendations
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications
  • English language fluency, both written and verbal
