Established in 1915 with Helen Keller as a founding trustee, Helen Keller International (HKI) is dedicated
to saving the sight and lives of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Headquartered in New York City,
HKI currently conducts programs in 21 countries in Africa and Asia, as well as in the United States.
Renowned for its reliability, efficiency and high level of technical expertise, HKI promotes the
development of sustainable, large-scale programs that deliver effective preventative and curative
services for nutrition, eye health and neglected tropical diseases. HKI also undertakes research to add
to global knowledge on what works and why in global health programming. Each year, HKI hosts student
interns to engage in substantive projects in our country and regional offices.
Background
Since 1999, HKI has implemented various neglected tropical disease control, nutrition and eye health
programs in Nigeria. Currently HKI works in 8 states of the federation in partnership with state
governments and stakeholders at various levels. These states include Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi,
Borno, Cross River, Kano, Katsina and Lagos. The current programs include projects for NTD Mass
Drug Administration, Trachoma surgery, support for school nutrition and active lifestyles, and Vitamin A
supplementation .
Scope of Work
The intern will work with the Nutrition and NTD Program Managers to draft 3-4 technical briefs and other
strategic communication materials on HKI’s NTD and Nutrition work in Nigeria. S/He will gain a thorough
understanding of the audience and the documentation required by meeting with HKI staff, including
interviewing managers on various technical processes and activities, potentially making visits to field
sites, and participating in relevant meetings with stakeholders. S/He will research the activities and
concepts to be documented, building his/her knowledge to eventually determine the clearest and most
logical way to present information to readers. S/He will write and edit technical information and prepare
or commission graphics and illustrations to elaborate on or complement this technical writing., S/He will
also support HKI Nigeria to draft public interest stories, such as success stories and participant
testimonials, bearing in mind the different audience for these types of materials.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field of study
• Experience in technical writing
• Skills with written communication and interviewing
• Ability to explain complex concepts clearly
• Interest in or experience with nutrition or NTDs programming
• Good planning and organization skills
• Self-motivated and able to work independently
• Ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances
• Knowledge of graphical design / layout software
Terms & Conditions
• A 12-week full-time commitment to the position is required but the dates of assignment are flexible.
• Costs associated with Internships are the full responsibility of the participating student,
including airfare, housing, daily living expenses, etc.
• HKI will only reimburse costs associated with actual project work, such as travel to state offices.
• HKI will assign a staff mentor to ensure the intern is provided with sufficient guidance.
• In addition, an Administrative Manager will be assigned (this may or may not be the same
person as the Mentor) to welcome and support the intern with regards to logistics, to act as the
local point of contact for all administrative information, and to serve as HKI headquarters
primary point of contact for the management of any incidents that may arise.
