Job Purpose:
The Gender Adviser will seek to deliver a step change in the organisation’s engagement on gender, developing high profile, impactful projects and deepening the mainstreaming of gender in project processes across the organisation.
The role will support the development, implementation and review of gender projects, support development of internal policy and organisational learning on gender, and represent BBC Media Action externally. The Gender Adviser will also assist the organisation to mainstream gender into all projects.
Context:
The Advisory and Policy team of BBC Media Action is responsible for supporting regional and country teams in the design, development (including strategic business development) and implementation of projects and programmes; on enabling greater strategic clarity, coherence and excellence in thematic portfolios across BBC Media Action; and in representing the thematic work of BBC Media Action to external audiences, including donors, academic institutions, institutional partners and others in relevant sectors.
BBC Media Action’s gender work is guided by the organisation’s gender equality approach which will be approved in summer 2017.

Main Duties:
The role has influence across the whole organisation – in headquarters and our 17 country offices. The post will also involve external engagement including with a range of development, policy and research actors.
Key accountabilities include:
- Providing technical support to the development, implementation and review of BBC Media Action’s gender projects
- Working intensively on development of specific projects – including potentially drafting key parts of funding proposals as agreed under the leadership of the relevant Country Director and other parts of the organisation in London
- Supporting organisational learning on gender, including through the provision of face-to-face support and training. Support inter-country cooperation and document organisational experience and learning
- Supporting implementation of internal strategies, theories of change and knowledge resources in gender to increase the sophistication of the organisation’s work on gender
- Support the development and publication of materials on media, communication and gender
Knowledge, Skills and Experience required
- Expertise on gender in international development, including experience of working with media and communication to improve gender equality
- Strong writing skills with a proven capacity to provide clear analysis on issues of gender
- Strong interpersonal skills, a capacity to engage with diverse internal and external stakeholders, often remotely, and an instinct/aptitude for creating connections across teams
- Strong understanding of the international development system, particularly of major gender initiatives
- Good knowledge of development donors’ policies and processes, particularly in the field of gender and experience of developing successful funding proposals
- Capacity to understand and engage with relevant external research and policy agendas and a capacity to link these creatively to the programming and thinking of the BBC Media Action
- Understanding of and experience working with monitoring and evaluation frameworks and tools; experience of using the logical framework approach would be particularly advantageous
- Degree level education is essential
Desirable
- Strong record of management and leadership
- Experience managing international development projects
Qualifications
- Degree level education is essential; a post-graduate qualification in gender, public policy, conflict, international development, comparative politics, human rights and/or media and communications is desirable.
