BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity, which uses media and communications to help reduce poverty and support people to understand their rights. We do this through partnering with civil society, media and others to produce creative programmes and other outputs which inform and engage audiences on key development issues. We also strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure. We focus on health, governance and rights, and resilience and humanitarian response. In Afghanistan we have produced a high profile radio and TV discussion programme, Open Jirga, which encourages accountability through enabling people from all over Afghanistan to question public figures, as well as a child health radio programme. We are building the capacity of local radio stations, supporting them to develop programmes on health and women’s rights.
Role Responsibility
You’ll manage and lead the delivery of our projects, supporting the creative development, editorial direction and production management of multimedia outputs. Working closely with the TV, radio and online staff, you’ll provide editorial leadership, ensuring all outputs adhere to BBC editorial standards. You will manage the project and other staff, build up project management capacity as well as supporting staff development in production and other editorial processes. You’ll also play a key role in securing new projects for the team, by building relations with donors and developing proposals. You’ll be based in Kabul, and may travel within Afghanistan. R&R arrangements will be provided.
The Ideal Candidate
We need your considerable experience developing and managing complex projects, ideally in the development sectors. You’ll have demonstrable commitment to international development, and experience of working with radio/television production staff. With significant experience in the effective management of diverse teams, including personnel development and capability management, you’ll also have strong financial management skills, including experience of managing large budgets and knowledge of the reporting requirements of funders. You’ll have shown your ability to secure new business, present persuasively to potential partners and write successful proposals.
