ActionAid Nigeria is seeking to recruit a consulting firm to conduct an income generating training for young school girls. The training will include production, packaging and simple basic marketing of household cleaning items for 24 girls’ spaces in Sokoto State.
Back ground of the Project
Promoting Girls Retention and Enrolment in Secondary School (PROGRESS) project aims to improve access, retention and learning outcomes of marginalized secondary school girls through interventions that strengthen the school- based management (SBMC) model and girl’s safe spaces. In SBMC the authority for administration, monitoring, evaluation and review of education policy issues, including governance, teaching and learning activities are devolved to a local SBMC. This comprises head and representative of teachers, parents, community, traditional institutions, students, alumni, faith-based organizations, artisans, civil society organization among others.
The project is currently running across 24 schools in 5 LGAs (Rabah, Bodinga, Wamako Gudu and Tangaza).
Project Goal: Girls in Sokoto State have Access to Quality Secondary Education.
Project Objectives
- 1. Support the systematisation and institutionalisation of SBMC in Sokoto state, through project pilot in 11 Junior Secondary School (JSS) and 9 Senior Secondary School (SSS) and an approved state policy on institutionalization of SBMC.
- 2. Advocate to government for the institutionalisation of SBMC in Sokoto State
- 3. Support the establishment and running of 24 in-school girls spaces towards improved life and vocational skills for girls in project schools in Sokoto State and linked to the SBMC.
- 4. Women wing of SBMC and four (4) professional bodies work towards girls’ enrolment, retention and improved quality education in 14 Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and 10 Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) in Sokoto State.
Project Outcomes
- Increased enrolment and retention of girls in 11 JSS and 9 SSS in Sokoto state.
- Improved learning outcomes for 3,458 girls in 11 JSS and 9 SSS in Sokoto state by 2017.
- Increased knowledge and practice on transferable skills acquisition and life skills through functional safe space for 3,458 girls in project schools.
- Functional SBMC in place in 14 JSS and 10 SSS and an approved policy on institutionalization of SBMC in Sokoto State
- Increased participation of womenin school governance towards improved girls’ education in 14 JSS and 10 SSS in Sokoto state.
- Contribution to knowledge on institutionalization of SBMC and other factors that enhance quality secondary education for girls in Sokoto state.
- Improved learning environment towards girls quality education in 14 JSS and 10 SSS in Sokoto State.
The Task
A need assessment was recently conducted across the project schools on what would the girls be interested in learning and be economically variable. The assessment reveals that basic household items like soap; Vaseline (Pomade), room freshener etc. are what the girls are interested in learning.
In view of the above, the task will be training of in school girls on the production, packaging and sample marketing strategy of the products.
SCOPE OF WORK
The consulting firm/consultant is therefore expected to design and refine (as required) a detailed training protocol that will support the desire of the girls. Locally soured materials will be use and branding of the items should be considered. The training period is for 10 days – 2 days per LGA. ActionAid expects a detailed soft copy report of the training.
EXPERTISE REQUIRED FOR THE TRAINING
The consulting firm/ consultant shall have:
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in similar training of women and girls.
- Strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity to effectively lead and interact with women, girls and programme stakeholders. Must be able to speak and train in
- Hausa language.
- Detail-oriented; demonstrated ability to multi-task and meet client deadlines.
- Must have consulted for similar pair organisation. (Details of training should be stated).
The consultant should be willing to adopt participatory process and collaborate with the programme staff from AA Nigeria and partners in planning and data collection. However, analysis of data, conclusion and recommendations will rest with the consultants.
The consultant will be paid based on the total number of days at the AAN consultancy policy rate. Please note that ActionAid Nigeria will deduct and remit to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) a 5% Withholding Tax from the total consultancy fees in accordance with the Nigerian Tax Law. To this effect, the consultant will be required to provide his or her Tax Identification Number (TIN).
