BBC Media Action uses media and communications to improve health, reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. To achieve this, it partners with civil society, local media and governments to:
Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.
BBC Media Action in South Sudan has projects addressing issues around health, girls’ rights, and conflict mitigation through different radio outputs including factual and drama programs. We will be looking to develop new projects in 2016 – 2017. We require an Executive Editor with a highly developed understanding of media and development together with solid radio production experience to lead us into the next phase of our country programme.
Role Responsibility
As Executive Editor, you will be responsible for delivering our radio outputs in South Sudan. Using your extensive experience of management, programme production and editorial expertise, you will oversee all production output. You will be leading a team of full-time staff, with some direct line management responsibilities, whilst also having responsibility for freelance production teams and actors. Our current output consists of one weekly radio drama and two radio factual programmes but we are looking to increase this in the near future. To oversee all of this, the Executive Editor will ensure systems are in place to support all aspects of production, supporting every stage of project design with the Senior Projects Manager from inception to post-production, and ensuring projects meet editorial standards and donor requirements.
The Ideal Candidate
We need your experience of managing production teams and allocating resources to deliver broadcast outputs (particularly radio) to tight time frames. You will have strong editorial judgement, demonstrable creative and journalistic ability and have a proven track-record in designing, developing and making media programmes. Considerable production budget management experience is required and we need your excellent leadership and people management skills.
