BBC Media Action is the BBC’s international development charity, which uses media and communications to help reduce poverty and support people to understand their rights. We do this through partnering with civil society, media and others to produce creative programmes and other outputs which inform and engage audiences on key development issues. We also strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure. In the Middle East and Europe (MEE) Team we do this with a focus on governance and rights and humanitarian response work. As Assistant Project Manager you will support a Projects Manager in the delivery of MEE projects.
Role Responsibility
This position will need you to ensure BBC MA internal project management systems and processes are complied with, effectively manage resources and processes in support of project delivery and provide backstopping support for the London based project team. You will need to liaise with BBC MA finance and BBC legal department to ensure that all new business complies with BBC and BBC MA rules and regulations, coupled with undertaking procurement and contractual arrangements with project consultants, suppliers, advisors and trainers. This role expects you to manage the security, health and safety of project staff and of any other person who may be affected by activities under his/her control in the region, along with setting up and managing processes for all projects in line with donor requirements. You’ll draft project proposals and reports, prepare documentation for BBC Legal and the Leadership team and arrange and facilitate duty/training trips, as and when necessary, and ensure logistical support.
The position requires willingness to travel at short notice (and at times for extended periods of time) potentially to hostile environments (subject to security conditions).
The Ideal Candidate
This position will need you to have successful project management support experience, along with experience in either media or development and be fluent in English (spoken and written). Fluency in Arabic is highly desirable. You will be expected to have excellent attention to detail, have the ability to work on your own initiative and organise time effectively within a range of conflicting deadlines. You‘ll have the capacity to juggle competing priorities and a busy programme of work while working to an agreed strategy. This role will also require you to have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate tactfully and effectively. You will have sound editorial judgement, knowledge and understanding of the varying needs and interests of audiences in developing countries and conflict zones and an understanding of quality programme-making and the use of media for development.
