Job Description

Background and Overall Scope
The Global SPRING Project is a five-year cooperative agreement funded by USAID. SPRING’s overarching vision is to reduce undernutrition, prevent stunting, and reduce the prevalence of anemia among women and children, especially in the first 1000 days of life. By providing state-of-the-art technical support, SPRING aims to strengthen country efforts to scale up high-impact nutrition practices and policies to improve maternal and child nutrition outcomes. The SPRING project implementation team consists of JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., Helen Keller International, International Food Policy Research Institute, Save the Children, and The Manoff Group.  SPRING/Ghana commenced operations from June 2014 and is complementing other projects under the Feed-the-Future country strategy that is contributing to USAID/Ghana’s goal of reducing the prevalence of stunting and anemia in northern Ghana.
SPRING/Ghana is collaborating with the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Nutrition Department and partners, to reposition and prioritize the anemia agenda at the national, regional and district levels in Ghana. SPRING/Ghana is leveraging the global SPRING technical capacity and experience in anemia programming to complement and help strengthen the multi-sectoral program strategy approach. The Anemia Program Specialist is responsible for coordinating with the GHS on SPRING/Ghana’s technical and programmatic approach to implement anemia control activities that involves the participation of several other stakeholders.  This position will provide technical leadership, capacity building for quality anemia program, and programmatic operational support.

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Party Program:

  1. Support DCOP Program and his team of Technical Lead and Technical Advisors by providing general day to day financial and administrative support;
  2. Support workshops and meetings:-
    • Plan, schedule and prepare meetings, workshops, monitoring visits, reviews, presentations with SPRING staff and partners;
    • Help prepare and disseminate workshop materials. Ensure SPRING districts receive training/workshop materials and that logistics are in place in a timely manner including but not limited to invitations and attendance confirmation of participants, info packets to participants, monitoring checklists, weight cards, etc.;
    • Ensure that participants, facilitators and project staff attending workshops, meetings, etc. complete registration formalities;
    • Ensure that payments to participants and facilitators during workshops, meetings, etc, are made according to SPRING policy and procedures;
  3. Assist in reception of district workplans and reports:
    • Review and summarize monthly workplans from District Coordinators/Advisors/Specialist and prepare a harmonized monthly country workplan;
    • Review and summarize monthly and reports from District Coordinators and ensure common issues are documented and brought to the attention of the Advisors/ Specialist; and monitor corrective action taken by them;
    • Help prepare field visit reports and other district related reports;
  4. Field success stories development:
    • Assist in developing success stories, take photographs at meetings, workshops, monitoring visits; document comments and suggestions made by participants and community members participating in workshops, meetings, etc.;
  5. Communication and coordination with DC’s and DO’s:
    • Ensure timely responses to inquiries from District Coordinators;
    • Help prepare briefs and minutes of project activities for presentation to stakeholders;
    • Document follow-up action to be undertaken by Advisors and the Specialist;
  6. Logistics support:
    • Office work including photocopying, printing, typing, binding, etc.;
    • Update DCOP Program,  Advisors/Specialist in regard to procurement and logistics and timely payment of vendors;
  7. Monitoring field activities:
    • Assist in monitoring implementation of activities in health facilities, project communities and districts;
  8. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor;

Required Skills or Experience

  • A university degree in BSc. Nutrition, Agricultural Technology, Community Development or other qualifications relevant to the position.
  • Must have completed National service.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, analytical, decision making, problem solving and administrative skills.
  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments, meet deadlines, work flexibly in a dynamic, fast paced environment, and maintain sense of perspective.
  • Good computer skills in MS Office (minimum Word, Excel and internet.)
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A minimum of 1 year relevant work experience with USAID funded project will be an added advantage.
