Oxfam International – Executive Director
Oxfam International is part of a global movement for change, building a future free from the injustice of poverty.
A diverse confederation of 17 national Affiliates working in over 90 countries, Oxfam works either directly, or with partners to enable transformational change, using a unique combination of long-term development, campaigning and humanitarian programmes. The threats to people living in poverty and to human rights are many, varied, and complex. Oxfam seeks to address the structural causes of poverty at all levels; local, national and global.
This means working with communities in developing countries on their priorities and active citizenship to hold the powerful – the global institutions, governments and businesses – accountable for their impact on poor communities. It means working with our supporters and campaigners to challenge the policies of the rich countries on issues that keep countries and communities in poverty; around basic rights such as health and education, aid levels, climate change, and global hunger. None of this can be achieved alone; increasingly Oxfam works with alliances in rich and poor countries to build movements for social justice.
In the face of the increasing need for humanitarian assistance because of weather related famines, it means trying to reach more vulnerable people than ever whilst also addressing the question of their long-term resilience.
And, it means, not just holding the powerful to account but seeking to influence them to ensure that the lives of people living in poverty can improve.
Oxfam International is seeking a new Executive Director. This leader will maintain Oxfam’s progressive vision, increase its effectiveness, and speak out for people living in poverty and for justice. Oxfam seeks a leader of integrity, wisdom, and organisational insight, who blends contagious conviction with clear-sighted realism. This leader will have a multi-cultural worldview and understand the systemic challenges and the strengths of being a global organisation. The call is for this person to be both a leader of a global network, releasing more of Oxfam International’s power, resources and passion while focusing it to respond effectively to rapid change, and to be the leader of the secretariat and a committed global team, inspiring them and coordinating their best efforts.
The role is based in Oxford, UK and the salary is commensurate with the seniority of the appointment.
